Meet Accra

accraSheppByTeresaSimao“I’m a fine arts photographer, and I found out about Hebrew Free Loan from my parents, who took a loan for $500 in the 1960s.

The jobs that are typically available to photographers like me are part-time or adjunct teaching jobs. Last year I was applying for teaching jobs, and for the first time in years, I couldn’t get anything.

I was running out of options. I had borrowed some money and I was getting some small photo jobs, but I wasn’t making the rent and I wasn’t able to pay child support.

My mom told me about how the loan they took from HFLS helped when I was young, and she encouraged me to apply.

The loan helped me when in I was in a seriously tight spot. There was a very real chance that I could have lost my apartment. Now I am working again, I still have my apartment and I’m able to pay the loan back.

Without HFLS, I don’t know what I would have done. HFLS had a huge impact on helping me to take those first steps to financial stability.”
