Ana Demel was born in Cuba and grew up in Puerto Rico. She attended Brandeis University as an undergraduate and NYU School of Law. She practiced law at Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLC for many years, including as a partner of the firm. At Cleary, Gottlieb she advised private and public sector clients on a wide variety of transactions principally in Latin America These included structured finance, project finance, sovereign debt restructurings and mergers and acquisitions as well as pro bono matters involving microfinance. Since leaving Cleary, Gottlieb in 2009, Ana has been an Adjunct Professor of Law at NYU School of Law, teaching courses on microfinance, social enterprise and project finance. She has served as a member, and now the chair, of the board of directors, of Pro Mujer, Inc., a U.S. a non-profit social enterprise that focuses on empowering women in Latin America through a variety of services including microfinance, preventive health services and entrepreneurship training. Ana is also a member of the board of Monster Energy Corp., a publicly traded beverage company.
