Intake Coordinator

THE ORGANIZATION

The Hebrew Free Loan Society (HFLS) advances economic stability and opportunity for lower-income New Yorkers within and beyond the Jewish community by making safe, affordable interest-free loans.

HFLS is the largest nonprofit interest-free lender in the United States. We have been making loans based on financial need to borrowers of all backgrounds since 1892. Our repayment rate is 99%, the result of a unique lending model that relies on personal guarantors to prevent default. As our loans are repaid, the capital is lent out again and again, helping more people and multiplying impact over time.

This year HFLS will lend approximately $40 million to around 2,000 households, and we strive to help more people every year.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Hebrew Free Loan Society (HFLS) seeks an Intake Coordinator, a new position at HFLS, to provide informative, responsive assistance and guidance for people interested in or in the process of applying for interest-free loans.

In many cases, the Intake Coordinator will be the first point of contact for people seeking financial assistance from HFLS. They will also bridge the work of HFLS Outreach Officers, who go out into local organizations and communities to share information about HFLS loans, and the work of HFLS lending staff responsible for processing completed applications.

The goals of this new position are to:

  • Increase the number of people who apply for HFLS loans
  • Increase and accelerate the completion rate of those applications
  • Provide applicants, potential applicants, and their guarantors with the ongoing, dedicated support they require and a positive, informative initial experience with HFLS

This position reports to the Lending Manager.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Promptly, accurately, and professionally respond to inquiries received to the main HFLS phone line and primary HFLS email address, including questions about applications, loan programs and eligibility, the HFLS portal, and general information
  • Direct email and phone inquiries related to other areas of HFLS’s work (development, finance, scholarships, etc) to the appropriate staff member or department
  • When necessary, guide people through application/guarantor form completion or use of the HFLS portal via phone or Zoom
  • Regularly review and follow up on incomplete applications in HFLS’s Salesforce loan management system, actively reaching out to applicants to offer assistance with application completion
  • Track trends in inquiries received and issues experienced by applicants/guarantors and promptly report them to the Lending Manager and relevant colleagues
  • Enter email correspondence and notes into application records in the HFLS Salesforce loan management system, so other staff have access to all pertinent information when processing and underwriting complete applications
  • Keep a database of local community resources (social services, legal aid, etc) to share with applicants when HFLS cannot assist or cannot address the scope of their needs
  • As needed, join Outreach Officers on visits to partner organizations and events where there is an opportunity to assist people with their applications in person
