HOW OUR HFLS JOURNEY BEGAN

We’re originally from the Dominican Republic, but Inwood—this vibrant Dominican neighborhood in Upper Manhattan—has always been home. As rent, groceries, and childcare costs kept rising, creating stability for our growing family became increasingly difficult.

More than ten years ago, we applied for a city-subsidized Mitchell-Lama co-op across the street from the apartment we were renting. When we were finally offered a larger apartment for our family of five, we were thrilled—but the upfront equity payment felt impossible.

That’s when we found the Hebrew Free Loan Society. Their interest-free Mitchell-Lama Homeownership Loan felt like a lifeline—real support, exactly when we needed it.

HOW HFLS HELPED

With the support of this loan, we were able to move into a home of our own and remain in the community we love. We stayed close to good schools, longtime friends, and the neighborhood that has always felt like home. Owning our apartment has given us something that’s hard to find in an expensive city like New York: stability.

Because of this opportunity, we’re not only building equity—we’re building confidence, stability, and a future that feels bright and full of possibility for our children.
