HOW MY HFLS JOURNEY BEGAN:

After law school, my husband and I moved to Texas to begin our careers—me in employment law, and him advocating for the civil rights of the wrongfully convicted. We knew there were risks—as a gay couple—but we were committed to serving communities that needed us. Texas was home, and we were excited to build a meaningful life there, surrounded by community and purpose.

As we began thinking about starting a family, we realized we wanted to put down roots in a place where we’d feel fully supported in every aspect of our lives. Over time, it became harder to ignore how unsafe our state was starting to feel. We wanted to grow our family in a place of safety, not fear.

HOW HFLS HELPED: THE SOLUTION

We were thrilled to buy our first home in Connecticut, but after an unexpected financial challenge hit our family, we didn’t have the funds to make the move happen without accruing high-interest credit card debt. With only one income, we faced a difficult situation: a mortgage in one state, rent in another, and a move we couldn’t yet afford. The costs of a moving POD, packing supplies, and a cross-country drive quickly added up on top of car payments, student loans, and basic living expenses.

That’s when I learned about the Hebrew Free Loan Society and the Keshet Move to Thrive loan. I almost didn’t apply—but I’m so glad I did. Within days, we were approved. This interest-free loan allowed us to pack our home, rent a POD, and make the move to Connecticut. I’ve already started a new job, become active in the community, and spent more time with my immediate and extended family.

Now, I’m working for a public university, and my husband is pursuing opportunities in Civil Rights and Criminal Defense. We’re settling into a supportive community and looking toward the future with optimism. This loan didn’t just help us move, it gave us a foundation to grow, give back, and dream even bigger.

We are endlessly grateful to the donors who made this possible.
