Ellen Braitman Elected as New HFLS Board Chair

We are delighted to share that Ellen Braitman will serve as the next Board Chair at the Hebrew Free Loan Society (HFLS). A career journalist who has been a reporter, editor, TV anchor, book author, and newsroom trainer, Ellen now heads up Bloomberg LP’s News Innovation Lab in the Americas.

Ellen was elected unanimously by the Society’s Board at its December 2023 meeting. Her term as Board Chair begins in June.

Ellen’s long standing leadership within HFLS, her extensive experience and accomplishments as a journalist and media professional, her experience serving on other boards, and her passion for economic opportunity make her an excellent choice to lead our Board.

Ellen helped grow the HFLS Next Generation group in its early years and has served in a variety of leadership positions at HFLS, including Chair of the Communications Committee, Chair of the Governance Committee, and as one of the Society’s two Vice Chairs.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Ellen is pursuing a Master’s degree in literature and creative writing. She is also a dedicated yoga instructor. Ellen and her husband David Shapiro are the proud parents of two daughters.

Ellen will succeed current HFLS Board Chair Ian Shrank, who will conclude two terms of service in 2024 and under whose leadership the organization’s lending has nearly tripled. Excited to continue and expand this growth trajectory, Ellen said, “It’s a privilege to follow Ian’s inspiring leadership in supporting our dedicated staff and Board as we nurture core lending programs and create new ones that let us help a growing number of borrowers achieve financial stability and access opportunity.”

Ellen will be sharing with you her aspirations and vision for HFLS when her term begins in June, but we could not wait to share the news about her election. Please join me in welcoming Ellen as the newest elected leader of the HFLS Board, a chain of leadership that extends back 132 years and is now extending forward with new energy and talent.
